Description: The present methods of managing the problems of the aged have proved unsatisfactory and inadequate. Common humanity demands the formulation of some program of care that permits the elderly to maintain dignity, self-respect, and a sense of worth as well as providing physical necessities. This can be accomplished by establishing local institutions designed to provide a program of activities and care suited to the needs and abilities of an aged resident population. In addition, it will permit this ever larger group to spend their declining years in a setting that encourages a sense of personal dignity and utilizes their skills.Under the current project proposal both municipalities are trying the tackle the above mentioned isuues by upgrading the existing social infrastructure. The idea is to reconstruct and transform the existing public buildings (Slivnitza' Maternity Hospital and Babushnitza First Aid Hospital) into a Elder Care Centers which will answer the needs of frail elders who are unable to care adequately for themselves. The Elder Care Center in Slivnitza will provide 24-7 social care services to at least 20 senior citizens of the municipality who are unable to take care of themselves while the Babushnitza Elder Care Center will provide daily health and social services to the senior citizen population in Babushnitza municipality. Upgrading the facilities will provide a specific way of increasing the autonomy of both care providers and care receivers from the crossborder region. The senior care institutions will provide specialized social and health care services and will employ qualified nurses and physicians. The project forsees strenghtening of the crossborder social and territorial cohesion through the organization of thematic events, during which the participants will tackle important issues in the field of elderly care and other problems associated with the provision of social services in the region. A shared approach to comprehensive geriatric assessment will be established through research in the field of European geriatrics. The common vision will be based on Bulgaria's and Serbia’ common attitudes and comparable organization of the health-care system.
