Description: Previous approaches to environmental protection focused on managing environmental impacts (e.g. waste and emissions to air and water) after they were created. Modern approaches aim to prevent or minimize environmental impacts in the first place. This is the bottom-line of the current action, based on the understanding that the common natural resources efficiently used and protected now and in the future are one of the pre-conditions for a sustainable growth of the cross-border area. The action is part of a systematic approach aimed at prevention or minimization of environmental problems, reflecting fundamental elements of contemporary thinking and problem perceptions. It deals with a large variety and rather diverse target groups which is the necessary prerequisite to achieve better synergy and multiplier effects also as a result of mutual cooperation. To this view the project has a clear ambition and targets and has identified priority areas of work and baseline interventions sought. In addition it will also build on the need and requirements to integrate environmental objectives into other policies. Despite the fact that the level of achievement of the project is not directly and easily measurable (as the seeds put in during the action will be visible at a much later stage) one clear direct impact is sought: at the end of the project the target audience and especially the companies should understand that in the very near future (if not already) they need to demonstrate a recognized track record of positive environmental performance. All target groups should be aware that future is dependent on each person’s ecological footprint as a measure of his own demand on the Earth's ecosystems. They should understand that long-term sustainable development is only possible if environmental stability is achieved with the joint efforts of all concerned.
